Houthis Target Aramco Refinery and Red Sea Port

Yemen’s Houthis launched an attack on the Mokha port, a key location on the Red Sea, leading to several casualties. At least seven individuals, including four troops and three civilians, lost their lives in this assault, which also injured 15 civilians. The port, essential for Yemen’s internationally recognized government, has recently been renovated to facilitate non-Houthi controlled operations.

The Houthis utilized missiles and drones in the attack, causing significant damage to the port’s infrastructure and supplies. They later claimed responsibility, noting the deployment of numerous ballistic missiles and drones targeting both military assets and warehouses.

In a related development, the Houthis targeted an Aramco refinery in Jazan, Saudi Arabia, using a drone. According to Yahya Saree, the Houthi military spokesperson, this was in retaliation for Saudi drones entering Yemeni airspace. The Saudi Energy Ministry reported a fire at the facility, stating it was extinguished with no casualties reported.

This incident marks a continuation of missile and drone strikes by the Houthis on Saudi Arabia, potentially reigniting Yemen’s civil war despite a truce reached in 2022.

Iran-Oman Deal on the Strait of Hormuz

The Strait of Hormuz, a vital global energy corridor, is under negotiation between Iran and Oman for reopening. Talks suggest ships might traverse the strait toll-free under an interim agreement as part of restored U.S.-Iran discussions on Iran’s nuclear program.

This potential agreement has garnered Gulf Cooperation Council backing, though specifics remain flexible before finalizing. Iran’s Supreme National Security Council has stipulated several conditions tied to the strait’s reopening, including an end to U.S. threats against Iran and lifting of naval blockades.

Iranian officials have conveyed these conditions through intermediaries, stressing that talks will not proceed unless previous agreements are honored by the U.S.

The U.S. Department of Defense aims to expedite munitions procurement to address demands from ongoing conflicts, particularly involving Iran.
