Migrants Surge Into Ceuta, Spain Faces Border Challenge

Thousands of migrants entered Ceuta, a small Spanish territory, from Morocco. This surge prompted local officials to request a national emergency declaration and army assistance to secure the border. The Spanish interior ministry affirmed the protection of citizens and border integrity but dismissed the call for an emergency declaration.

Footage shows the migrants, mainly Moroccans, moving onto roads at Tarajal beach. While many were young men, families with women and children were also present. Some expressed enthusiasm for Spain. Ceuta is a significant entry point into Europe for those seeking better opportunities or fleeing violence.

The border activity mirrors the May 2021 incident when over 8,000 migrants entered Ceuta in just two days. Juan Jesús Vivas, Ceuta’s regional government head, urged for more police and army deployment to enhance border security and citizen safety. He noted overcrowded reception centers and people sleeping on the streets.

The interior ministry clarified that migration does not qualify as a national security threat under emergency legislation. Government bodies are coordinating to address the situation effectively. Spain highlighted Morocco’s cooperation in controlling the border flow, with Moroccan police preventing crossings.

Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska is set to visit Ceuta to assess the situation firsthand.
