Mike Tomlin Advocates for Hines Ward’s Hall of Fame Induction During NBC Debut

During his first appearance on NBC Sports, Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin made a strong case for one of his former players to join the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tomlin was part of the analyst team for the annual Hall of Fame Game between the Carolina Panthers and the Arizona Cardinals. Both teams featured players who are part of this year’s Hall of Fame Class: Luke Kuechly from the Panthers and Larry Fitzgerald from the Cardinals.

When asked about his choice for a Hall of Fame “Golden Ticket,” Tomlin quickly nominated his former player, Hines Ward. “My Golden Ticket unquestionably goes to Hines Ward. He’s got Hall of Fame numbers. He’s got 1,000 career catches, 12,000 yards, 85 touchdowns, a Super Bowl MVP,” Tomlin stated during NBC’s broadcast. “Beyond the statistics, it was his style of play. This guy was a predator, not prey. Every defensive player in the NFL feared Hines Ward.”

Ward had a 13-year career in the NFL, all with the Steelers from 1998 to 2011. He won two Super Bowls with the team and was the MVP of Super Bowl XL. Under Tomlin’s leadership, Ward played a key role in the 2009 Super Bowl-winning season. In addition to these achievements, Ward was a four-time Pro Bowl selection.

Currently, Ward ranks 31st in all-time receiving yards. He faces potential overtaking by two active players: Keenan Allen of the Los Angeles Chargers and Stefon Diggs of the Washington Commanders, depending on their future seasons. Despite Ward’s achievements, he remains a semifinalist among this year’s Hall of Fame voting group. His peers include fellow potential inductees like Anquan Boldin of the 49ers and Ravens, and Sterling Sharpe of the Packers.

Tomlin himself is likely to secure a Hall of Fame spot due to his significant accomplishments as a head coach. Over 19 seasons with the Steelers, he achieved a 193–114–2 record, including a Super Bowl win in 2009 and an NFL record of 19 consecutive winning seasons as head coach.

Tomlin’s debut as an NBC analyst has been well-received, with positive feedback from fans on social media. He is set to continue on NBC’s football coverage, mostly during Sunday nights. The network’s first regular-season broadcast will feature the New England Patriots versus the Seattle Seahawks.
