Mike LaFleur Makes NFL Head Coaching Debut with Arizona Cardinals

After a long wait of 12 years, Mike LaFleur has stepped into the role of an NFL head coach for the first time. His journey began as an offensive intern with the Cleveland Browns in 2014. A year later, he advanced to become an offensive assistant with the Atlanta Falcons.

By 2017, LaFleur took on a significant responsibility with the San Francisco 49ers, serving as a passing game coordinator and wide receivers coach. His career progressed when he became the offensive coordinator for the New York Jets in 2021. Later, in 2023, he took the same role with the Los Angeles Rams.

Now, LaFleur stands at the helm of the Arizona Cardinals. Just before his debut, he received a supportive visit from his brother, Matt LaFleur, who is the head coach of the Green Bay Packers.

Hey man, you’ve earned this opportunity, Matt said. Go let it rip, have fun, and I’m proud of you buddy. I love you, man.

Mike responded with deep appreciation saying, I did not expect that right there. I appreciate that, guys. That’s pretty cool. I appreciate that. Now you’ve got me a little emotional.

The Hall of Fame game presented positives for the Cardinals, though it concluded with a 33-30 loss to the Carolina Panthers. The game primarily featured second- and third-string players.

If Mike’s coaching journey mirrors that of his brother Matt, he would find great satisfaction. Matt LaFleur’s record with the Packers over seven seasons includes 76 wins, 40 losses, and one tie. His accomplishments feature six playoff appearances, four seasons with double-digit wins, three division titles, and two NFC Championship Game appearances.
