Authorities in Minnesota have disclosed the names of those involved in the Minneapolis apartment shooting on Wednesday. The incident resulted in the deaths of two civilians and injuries to two police officers.
The civilians were identified as 63-year-old Dale Henry Spry and 61-year-old Muse A. Afrah, as confirmed by the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA). One of the victims died on the scene, while the other succumbed to injuries at the hospital. Both individuals are believed to have resided in the apartment complex where the shooting occurred.
The alleged shooter, Carlton Neal Johnson II, aged 35, began the attack before being killed in an exchange of fire with the police. A preliminary autopsy revealed that Johnson died from multiple gunshot wounds, and his death has been classified as a homicide.
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) officers injured in the incident were named as Joseph Michnowski, with five years of service, and Yahye Ahmed, a nearly two-year veteran. Ahmed has since been discharged from the hospital, while Michnowski remained hospitalized as of Thursday afternoon.
MPD public information officer Garrett Parten stated that one officer sustained a non-life-threatening gunshot wound to the leg, while another officer required surgery. An additional officer, Ernest Boateng, was injured while breaking a window in a locked police vehicle. Boateng was treated for cuts and released on Wednesday.
The BCA reported that at least one officer fired a weapon during the incident, identifying the officer as Liban Mohamed Ibrahim, who has been with the MPD for two years. Investigations are ongoing to determine if any other officers discharged their firearms during the event.
The shooting reportedly started during a domestic child custody exchange involving Johnson and a woman. Johnson allegedly shot the woman outside the building, then entered the apartment and shot another facility worker. He continued to the ninth floor, where he shot the two residents who were later declared dead.
It was reported that Johnson faced eviction from the apartment building, as revealed by court records from Fox9 Minneapolis. Whether the victims were intentionally targeted by Johnson has not been confirmed.
