Minnesota Governor Warns Democrats About Backlash Without Structural Changes

Governor Tim Walz of Minnesota has issued a warning to his fellow Democrats. He believes there will be consequences if the party fails to implement substantial structural changes after winning elections. In an interview with David Sirota, founder of ‘The Lever,’ Walz discussed the Democratic Party’s tendency to promise more than it delivers.

Walz stated, “Yes, a hundred percent. It’s a hundred percent.” He emphasized that winning elections should be about improving lives, not merely banking political capital for future victories. He pointed out that the slow pace of change is often due to structural issues.

Walz highlighted former Senator Joe Manchin’s stance on preserving the Senate filibuster. He said, “Look, I’m friends with Joe Manchin, but the desire to hold on to the filibuster at all costs…had real impacts on people’s lives.” Walz argued that by preserving the filibuster, Democrats have played into Republican hands, leading to voter frustration from a lack of progress.

During 2022, Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema voted against lowering the Senate’s 60-vote threshold, thwarting efforts from Democrats aiming to pass voting legislation.

Walz, who is the Democratic vice-presidential nominee for 2024, noted the risk if Democrats don’t address structural changes like income disparities and opportunity inequities. He expressed concern, “Here’s where I think the real danger is…if Democrats do all of this, the public turns out, they vote for us, and kids still can’t afford a college education, can’t afford housing, that’s going to be a problem.” Walz predicted Democratic control of the House, Senate, and presidency by 2028.

Lindsey Drath, CEO of the Forward Party, weighed in, cautioning against abolishing the filibuster. She argued that Congress fails to deliver material solutions due to a focus on party-line votes. Drath remarked, “This circular dynamic…accumulates a figurative debt against the challenges facing the American people.” She emphasized that the incentive to obstruct is greater than the drive to negotiate.

Drath further explained a “fulcrum strategy” that leverages a small bloc of independents to balance power in Congress without giving full majority to either side. This strategy necessitates negotiation before legislation passes.

Walz announced in January that he would not seek elected office again, after previously announcing he wouldn’t run for a third term as governor. He reflected on his tenure during a perceived fraud within Minnesota’s social services programs. “Fraud – should have stopped it sooner,” Walz acknowledged in a talk with the Minnesota Star Tribune. He accepted accountability, noting efforts were “immediate” once fraud was discovered, but he considered estimates by federal prosecutors, around $9 billion, overstated.

The governor compared the fraud expenses to construction costs within the White House, questioning their relative scale. He stated, “I should have been down on those agencies a little more…all the fraud that’s probably out there is less than the ballroom at the White House.” He concluded, “So it puts it into perspective. It doesn’t make it right.”
