A tragic incident during a cruise in Italy claimed the life of a Minnesota pastor, Steve Junker. Junker, from Elbow Lake, suffered a severe spinal cord injury on the Sun Princess while celebrating his son’s wedding on August 16. He was found face down and unresponsive in a pool, as detailed in a GoFundMe page set up by his family.
Princess Cruises confirmed Junker’s passing in a statement to Fox News Digital, expressing their deep condolences to the family during this difficult time. They explained that ship personnel were alerted to his need for medical assistance. Junker was attended to by the ship’s medical team before being transferred ashore for further care.
The family shared that Junker experienced a near-drowning incident that led to the spinal cord injury. Following the accident, he was transported to a hospital in Naples by an Italian Coast Guard boat, admitted to the intensive care unit, and underwent emergency spinal surgery. The surgery was successful, but Junker’s injury remained severe.
Junker’s family faced challenges navigating medical care abroad and arranged for transportation to the United States. On August 23, he was taken to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, for additional treatment.
Despite efforts to save him, Junker passed away on September 4, surrounded by loved ones. The pastor’s passing was marked by reflections on his strong faith and impactful life. Chippewa Lutheran Church posted a message honoring his devotion and the positive influence he had on many.
In response to his death, family members expressed gratitude for the prayers and support they received during the ordeal. They noted Junker’s transition from pharmacy to ministry and his role as a loving husband, father, and grandfather. His memory lives on in the hearts of those he touched.
