The New York Knicks are preparing for their NBA Finals matchup against a Western Conference team, but a potential injury issue has surfaced involving their backup big man, Mitchell Robinson. According to reports from ESPN, Robinson required surgery to repair a broken pinkie finger on his right hand. This news quickly sparked concern among fans worried about Robinson’s availability for the series.
ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith, a prominent Knicks supporter, shared that he first heard of Robinson’s injury through a message from hip-hop artist DJ Clue. During an appearance on ‘First Take,’ Smith emphasized the importance of Robinson’s presence in the Finals while discussing the situation with colleagues Jay Williams and Brian Windhorst.
‘They are supposed to be relaxing. Receiving treatment. Engaging in recovery activities like cold plunges and saunas. Mitchell Robinson should be getting ready, not dealing with a pinkie,’ Smith stated passionately.
‘Let me talk directly to Mitchell Robinson; you need to play in the series. This is the Finals. I don’t want to hear excuses about a pinkie,’ Smith declared, addressing Robinson through the camera.
Smith humorously referenced NFL legend Ronnie Lott, who famously allowed his finger to be amputated to continue playing. Smith acknowledged Robinson’s limitations in shooting, particularly with a 50 percent free-throw rate, but highlighted his rebounding and defensive skills in the paint.
‘If Robinson misses games due to a pinkie, I’ll be upset! Wrap it up, splint it—whatever it takes—it’s the Finals!’ Smith exclaimed emphatically.
New York needs all available players to face the formidable opponents in the Finals. The Oklahoma City Thunder and San Antonio Spurs both boast strong players in the paint, such as Chet Holmgren, Isaiah Hartenstein, and Victor Wembanyama. The Knicks will rely on Robinson to assist starters like Karl-Anthony Towns in these challenging matchups, given their physical nature and potential fouls.
According to a report from Shams Charania, Robinson has expressed his intention to participate in Game 1. While his free-throw shooting remains inconsistent, the Knicks players are well-rested after securing 11 consecutive victories, including a sweep against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Robinson should have time to recover and prepare for Game 1 on Wednesday, June 3.
