Mixed Reactions to the U.S. 250th Birthday Celebrations
The upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States aims to rally Americans through national community-service initiatives and patriotic brand launches. Reputable nonprofits in the country aspire to encourage an unprecedented level of volunteerism. Major companies, including Walmart and Coca-Cola, are endorsing tributes and retailing limited-edition products. However, the private sector’s objectives face a mixed reception, hindered by national unease. According to a recent survey from The Associated Press-NORC Center for Public Affairs Research, fewer Americans view their country as exceptional compared to a decade ago. Patriotic sentiment is on the decline, with opinions on the American flag varying across political lines, age, and race.
Two commissions have planned rival events, contributing to the conflicting feelings. In late 2022, President Donald Trump established Freedom 250, a nonprofit organized by his allies to offer alternative programming to America250, the official bipartisan group created by Congress in 2016. Trump expressed enthusiasm for the Great American State Fair at his June 24 rally, despite losing musical performers due to concerns over political tensions. The tone differed from America250’s America Gives initiative, which strives to enhance volunteering habits by motivating Americans to engage with nonprofit partners and log volunteer hours online. Salvation Army USA National Commander Merle Heatwole noted political agendas attached to the nonpartisan program, although thousands of churches participated in the May ‘Good Neighbor Day’ of volunteering.
The America Gives tracker accounted for over 38 million volunteered hours entering the holiday weekend, but it’s unclear what would constitute a record. From 2022-2023, Americans recorded 4.99 billion volunteering hours, according to AmeriCorps analysis. America250 Chair Rosie Rios anticipates a year-end surge as partners update their volunteer hours toward the year’s conclusion. She stresses that promoting the value of service remains their sole agenda.
A consultant, Jayne Cravens, finds most nonprofits aren’t capitalizing on semiquincentennial campaigns due to lacking infrastructure for impactful volunteering experiences. These challenges intensified after the Trump administration dismantled AmeriCorps in 2025, prompting nonprofits to scramble for workers and funding replacement. Audra Watson of the nonprofit C&S leads a three-year campaign for civic engagement among 14-24-year-olds, noting that many embrace engagement opportunities beyond the 250th milestone.
Jennifer Lawson, president of Keep America Beautiful, highlights that 4.5 million participants have contributed over 2.5 million hours to environmental efforts under her network’s semiquincentennial campaign. Lawson observes a desire for belonging and community care, yet confusion over starting points.
Marketing consultants caution brands amid national division and reducing patriotic pride. Competing logos further convolute 250th event advertising. The America250 emblem features a continuous ribbon in red, white, and blue spelling ‘250,’ while Freedom 250’s design incorporates stars in a circle acknowledging the original U.S. flag. Allen Adamson from Metaforce remarks on the confusion caused by two logos.
Walmart, an America250 founding sponsor, is collecting oral histories via a mobile recording studio, with selection archiving by the Library of Congress. Coca-Cola’s ‘Paint the Nation’ initiative results in public art murals, reflecting community pride beyond the anniversary. Not everyone embraces the brand offerings, as seen from mixed consumer reactions.
Cultural historian M.J. Rymsza-Pawlowska recalls the shift from politically charged celebrations of American supremacy during the 1976 bicentennial. President Nixon emphasized grassroots, federally funded programming that sparked civic involvement still popular today. Current private funders support similar efforts, yet without the scale achievable through government backing.
