Munster Town Council Faces Leadership Changes as Chuck Gardiner Resigns
The Munster Town Council is undergoing a leadership shift as Councilman Chuck Gardiner resigns. Announced at the council meeting on Monday, Gardiner stated his resignation is effective Tuesday, October 20. He has served for 6 ½ years as a councilman and a member of the Redevelopment Commission.
During the meeting, Gardiner expressed his admiration for Munster’s community spirit and thanked residents for their support. He also praised town employees for their professionalism. “I have always believed that a community grounded in connection, optimism, and unity is far stronger than one driven by fear and division,” he stated.
Gardiner highlighted the community’s resilience during two significant crises: the 2020 pandemic and the 2026 EF1 tornado. Despite his contributions, Gardiner did not specify his resignation reasons in writing. However, he later discussed with the Post-Tribune his frustration with the political environment and discord among council members.
“I’ve thought about this a lot. I want the town to succeed, but I’m burned out,” Gardiner explained. “I don’t want to go through a campaign in a year and a half.” The process for replacing Gardiner involves submitting his resignation to the Lake County Clerk’s office. After this, the Lake County Republican Party has 30 days to organize a caucus to select a new council member.
Council President Joe Hofferth praised Gardiner’s contributions, acknowledging his hard work and involvement in council activities. Other council members, including Dave Nellans and Jonathan Petersen, also expressed their gratitude for Gardiner’s service, while Councilman George Shinkan noted the positive influence Gardiner had on the council.
In a social media message, Shinkan alluded to issues within the council, questioning how one person could cause division. Though he did not name anyone specifically, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing the community over personal or political agendas.
Recent months have seen significant shifts in Munster’s town governance. Longtime attorneys Nicole Bennett and David Westland resigned in June, citing harassment from Petersen. Town Manager James Marino retired the following month, with Tricia Abbott taking over the position. Previously, former Town Manager Dustin Anderson and Public Works Director Jill DiTommaso also resigned in early 2024. Abbott served as interim Town Manager until Marino was appointed in April 2025, but his tenure was brief as Robert Valois, Director of Public Works, also left in early 2026.
