Musician Zach Bryan made headlines by wearing a ‘Free Palestine’ shirt at Gillette Stadium. Bryan’s concert attire echoed sentiments shared by rapper Macklemore, who had previously faced backlash for similar comments.
Bryan’s performance was the first of two scheduled concerts at the venue. The shirt read ‘Free Palestine’ and ‘An appeal to heaven,’ accompanied by a pine tree logo. Several band members wore similar clothing, supporting the message.
The phrase ‘An appeal to heaven’ dates back to the Revolutionary War. It was part of the Massachusetts official maritime flag until 1971. The phrase was rooted in the belief of divine assistance against tyranny.
Macklemore was removed from Ed Sheeran’s tour schedule at Gillette Stadium after making pro-Palestinian statements.
The owner of the stadium, Robert Kraft, contacted Ed Sheeran to prevent Macklemore’s performance. Kraft cited concerns over antisemitic rhetoric and its impact on the Jewish community.
Macklemore addressed these concerns on Instagram, acknowledging antisemitism while advocating for distinguishing it from criticisms of Israel. He pledged $1 million to Palestinian support efforts and invited Kraft to join. Kraft referred to a previous commitment between himself and Sheeran for a $2 million donation.
Ed Sheeran’s shows on September 25 and 26 were canceled because of a nor’easter storm, further impacting the planned events at Gillette Stadium.
