DETROIT, MICHIGAN — Abdul El-Sayed, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Michigan, encounters a notable divide among Muslim voters. While some oppose his views on abortion and LGBTQ issues, they still plan to support him.
One conference attendee from the Islamic Society of North America (ISNA), preferring to stay anonymous, described El-Sayed as a “Democrat with a Muslim mask,” akin to Ilhan Omar but male. Despite disagreeing with El-Sayed’s positions, the attendee still wishes for his election to enhance community representation.
Fox News Digital attended the ISNA’s annual conference in Detroit over Labor Day weekend, where El-Sayed’s presence provoked discussion, particularly due to past controversial remarks by some speakers. This has increased focus on El-Sayed’s connection to the organization and his campaign’s coalition.
‘Destroying the American Way of Life’: El-Sayed’s Political Network Challenges His Moderate Reputation
Fox News Digital spoke with about 10 conference attendees, some anonymously, about the tension between their personal views on social issues and their support for El-Sayed. They expressed reservations on abortion and LGBTQ matters.
El-Sayed advocates for Roe v. Wade to become law, supports Planned Parenthood funding, promotes LGBTQ-inclusive sex education, and permits doctors to perform sex-change operations on minors. Islamic theology generally holds more conservative views on these topics, though opinions differ among Muslims.
A Navy veteran at the conference voiced strong opposition to El-Sayed’s views on such issues, yet felt let down by the Republican Party after the 2024 election. He cited foreign wars and cost-of-living issues under the Trump administration as reasons for supporting El-Sayed despite his liberal stance.
Several attendees, including those who supported Trump in 2024, are now backing El-Sayed in the midterm elections.
Michigan Senate Race: El-Sayed’s Links to Extremism Raise Concerns Among Jewish Voters
Voters are worried about tax dollars funding foreign conflicts. Zubin, a long-time El-Sayed supporter, noted these issues resonate with both Muslim and general Michigan voters. Dissatisfaction with U.S. Middle East policies, including Trump’s actions in Israel and Iran, is growing.
Trump performed unusually well among Michigan’s Arab Americans in 2024, but a shift in their support could affect Republican Senate prospects. The GOP aims to gain support from disenchanted Jewish Democrats.
Some attendees were surprised by El-Sayed’s support for abortion and LGBTQ rights. One anonymous attendee expressed disapproval, citing Islam’s stance against LGBTQ practices and abortion.
They suggested awareness of El-Sayed’s social views might reduce support within the Islamic community. Others noted generational differences in social views, with younger Muslims possibly aligning more with El-Sayed.
Despite conservative community beliefs, some argue these will be secondary in the election. Fauzi, another conference attendee, emphasized El-Sayed’s potential impact on education and healthcare.
Jewish Democrat Defections Threaten El-Sayed in Michigan Senate Race With Narrow Margins
Several attendees expressed interest in a Muslim Republican candidate, though they recognized the party’s reputation could hinder its support among Arab Americans.
Zubin highlighted the possibility of a Muslim Republican gaining support if they hold appealing values. Another anonymous attendee pointed out challenges due to Republican voter biases.
The El-Sayed campaign did not respond to Fox News Digital’s request for comment.
