Nancy Guthrie Abduction: Ongoing Investigation and Family Plea

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos remains “positive” about resolving the Nancy Guthrie case. Over 25 weeks have passed since her abduction during a home invasion in Tucson, Arizona. “We have so much DNA to sort through,” Nanos mentioned in a “Today” interview. Nancy Guthrie, 84, is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, a co-host of the show.

Progress in the Investigation

During a press briefing on May 8, 2026, Sheriff Nanos explained that investigators are making headway with extensive video evidence. He said, “So I’m still positive that we’re here to resolve this case.” The sheriff’s comments followed Savannah Guthrie’s emotional video plea to her mother’s abductors, asking for information about her location. A federal source revealed Savannah consulted law enforcement before releasing the video.

Erin McLaughlin, an NBC colleague, remarked that Savannah’s message could respond to a potential new communication line. However, law enforcement has not publicly updated the investigation recently.

Technical Efforts and Evidence Recovery

FBI Director Kash Patel detailed efforts to recover recordings from Guthrie’s Nest doorbell camera. These recordings faced imminent deletion, but video evidence was made public on February 10. Nanos did not respond to further questions, but investigators have searched neighborhoods near Guthrie’s and her daughter’s homes for video evidence of suspects or suspect vehicles.

“I wonder how many ‘leads’ they’ve covered,” said retired FBI agent Jason Pack. “There would be thousands, running down every device on the phone tower and their Wi-Fi router.”

Experts note the case is not yet cold, given the leads and evidence. “If the sheriff says they have that much DNA and video, it’s not cold until those leads are resolved,” Pack stated. The investigation likely involves terabytes of digital evidence.

Officials urge anyone with information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI. An anonymous reward is available through 520-88-CRIME for information leading to an arrest. “There’s a lot of pressure on criminals to keep such a secret, especially with a high-profile case,” Pack concluded. “The pressure from others involved and the over a million-dollar reward add to the stakes.”
