Three-time Olympic swimming gold medalist Nancy Hogshead has called for the WNBA to limit player eligibility to biological females. She initiated a Change.org petition demanding the league clarify the term ‘woman’ in its eligibility criteria. Since its launch on August 14, the petition has gathered over 11,000 signatures.
Hogshead explained, “We’re urging the WNBA to specify that its eligibility rules are for women only. Participation requires being a certain age and female.” Her ultimate goal is to amass 100,000 signatures. “It’s an 80/20 issue across the country,” Hogshead stated. “We have over a million people engaging with our materials. We need them to sign.”
The WNBA’s 2026 collective bargaining agreement states that only women are eligible to play. However, the agreement lacks a detailed definition of ‘woman’ concerning gender identity or biological sex.
The debate intensified when former NBA players Enes Kanter Freedom and Royce White announced plans to enter the 2027 WNBA Draft, claiming to identify as women. League sources dismissed these announcements as ‘publicity stunts’ and stated they are ineligible.
Hogshead commented on this, “I love that they came forward. It highlights the WNBA’s and gender ideology’s contradictions. Their actions exposed the flaws inherent in gender ideology.”
The WNBA previously reported no immediate eligibility issues and condemned attempts to disrespect others through the debate. Commissioner Cathy Engelbert reassured that league officials would continue discussing the matter with the players’ union and stakeholders.
Hogshead’s petition coincides with rallies at WNBA games in support of Indiana Fever guard Sophie Cunningham. Cunningham has publicly opposed transgender participation in girls’ and women’s sports. Hogshead praised Cunningham, “I admire her stance for women. The more people see of Sophie Cunningham, the more they appreciate her.”
Nancy Hogshead, an Olympic champion with three gold medals and a silver from the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, later transitioned to civil rights law. She founded Champion Women, advocating for women and girls in sports.
