Nancy Pelosi Launches Nonpartisan Institute at UC Berkeley
Rep. Nancy Pelosi, who has spent nearly 40 years in Congress as a leading power broker, announced plans for her next chapter after leaving office in January. She will collaborate with UC Berkeley students through the Nancy Pelosi Institute for Representative Democracy.
The institute, funded by tens of millions from Pelosi and other donors, aims to attract top scholars, inspire student interest in public service, and act as a counterbalance to other political institutes. This follows a tradition of political figures affiliating with universities. Notable examples include Harvard’s Institute of Politics and Stanford’s Hoover Institution.
UC Berkeley, famed for its historic role in the free speech movement and anti-Vietnam protests, will host a nonpartisan endeavor under Pelosi’s guidance. She intends for Republicans, Democrats, and possibly Trump-aligned figures, to participate in discussions on American politics without partisan biases.
Pelosi, the first female Speaker of the House, highlighted her commitment to educating students about the founding principles now under threat. She emphasized the importance of the Constitution, specifically the separation of powers, and criticized current political challenges.
Anchored in UC Berkeley’s Political Science Department, the institute plans to impact 500 students annually with diverse courses. Pelosi, alongside political scientist Eric Schickler, will co-teach a course on Congress in spring 2027. The institute will host visiting fellows, support faculty research, and establish exhibits on Pelosi’s Congressional career.
This initiative represents Pelosi’s intention to contribute to Berkeley by sharing her extensive network and practical experience. She hopes to learn from students and faculty, guiding future political conversations.
UC Berkeley Chancellor Rich Lyons stresses the institute’s nonpartisan mission, a challenge given Pelosi’s lengthy political history. Despite Pelosi’s strong opposition to Trump, she concedes the importance of academic neutrality.
Pelosi collaborates with Berkeley faculty while granting them control over the institute’s operations. She hinted at the possibility of inviting figures from the Trump administration as visiting fellows, despite her reservations.
Pelosi’s transition into nonpartisan academia includes a stipulation that her reputation and expertise must not influence the institute’s programming. She underscores the strength found in association with an academic institution rather than leading a private foundation.
This project is Pelosi’s second academic venture, with her first initiative being the Paul F. Pelosi Scholars Initiative at Georgetown. The Berkeley institute, however, marks her most ambitious effort. With a funding goal of $50 million, $35 million has already been secured.
As Pelosi prepares to leave Congress, she remains a prominent San Francisco resident and plans to commute to Berkeley. Chancellor Lyons emphasizes the need to separate current political stereotypes from historical perceptions of Berkeley.
Scott Straus, chair of the Political Science department, confirms the goal of recruiting visiting fellows with varied political perspectives.
Schickler shared insights into his future collaboration with Pelosi. He noted that her contributions would empower the department to pursue initiatives otherwise constrained by resources. The institute aims to bridge the gap between Berkeley’s resource limitations and the benefits seen at well-endowed private institutions.
Ultimately, the institute will prepare students for roles as advocates, organizers, and public servants. Pelosi sees this as an opportunity to address political inequities while securing a legacy in education.
For Pelosi, the institute also secures her legacy beyond Congress. She sees it as an investment in future leadership, drawing on inspiration from historical leaders like Abraham Lincoln.
