Before the Apollo 11 mission in 1969, David Bowie’s poignant song about “Major Tom” depicted an astronaut lost in space. Today, my family celebrates a different story. The NASA astronaut in our family, Chris Williams, is back safely on Earth. Chris returned Sunday morning, landing in Kazakhstan after a remarkable space journey of 102 million miles over eight months on the International Space Station (ISS). He was then escorted to the Johnson Space Center in Houston.

From a young age, Chris showed curiosity. As a child, he wore an astronaut-themed onesie. Now, he wears the U.S. flag on a real spacesuit. Chris undertook two spacewalks to repair the ISS’s robotic arms, tethered to the station as he floated in space. Watching him live on NASA TV was extraordinary.

Inside the ISS, Chris and fellow astronauts studied various phenomena. They examined how zero gravity affects vision and the orientation of the brain’s sense of direction. They also assessed changes in bone density and DNA during extended space travel. Chris spent a month as the sole American on the ISS when a colleague had to evacuate due to illness.

An air leak in June led to an emergency. NASA briefly relocated Chris and four others to a smaller spacecraft called “Dragon” until the leak was fixed. His family anxiously waited on Earth for two hours until it was resolved.

Chris gained unexpected fame for his astral photography. An article in USA Today described him as renowned for capturing striking images. From the ISS cupola, he took photos in February of Lunar New Year fireworks in China. Astronaut Zena Cardman praised his work, while Anne McClain commended the clarity of his images.

In April, Chris posted on social media a breathtaking image of an object streaking above West Africa, possibly satellite debris. His commentary noted it was “quite a light show.”

Chris also engaged with students from New York and Florida, discussing the differences in conducting research on Earth versus in space. A physicist with a Ph.D. from MIT, Chris highlighted the challenges in space, using Velcro to keep tools from floating away. Students were curious about the food, to which Chris responded positively, crediting Houston’s food science experts. He even demonstrated the fun of consuming a floating water bubble, amusing everyone.

These interactions aimed to inspire young Americans to pursue science and math. Chris encouraged future generations to lead U.S. missions back to the moon and even to Mars. When four other American astronauts orbited the moon during Artemis II in April, Chris communicated with them from the ISS, even appearing on “Fox News Sunday.” His live segment, where he floated off-screen, amazed the staff, marking a unique moment in TV history.

On a personal note, Chris stayed connected with his family, calling his wife, daughters, sister Ashley, and parents regularly. He joined a family streaming session spanning the U.S., Europe, and Panama, and appeared live at his father’s church on Father’s Day, moving the congregation with his presence as he orbited Earth.

His father, Roger, led a prayer, expressing pride and asking for Chris’s safe return. The church congregation concluded with words of hope and unity: “Until We See You Again.” Today, that hope is realized.
