Nashville International Airport could soon honor Dolly Parton by adopting her name. On Friday, the governor and airport made this announcement in recognition of the country music legend and philanthropist. Parton, originating from rural Tennessee, passed away Tuesday at 80 years old.
A news release revealed that both the airport and Tennessee Governor Bill Lee intend to use her name as a tribute. They aim to acknowledge her significant impact and the inspiration she provided to countless individuals across Tennessee and globally. The decision regarding the airport’s renaming will be considered at the Metro Nashville Airport Authority’s meeting on September 17.
Governor Lee communicated with Parton’s representatives about this proposal. He shared that they expressed gratitude for the initiative. Lee remarked, “Dolly Parton’s extraordinary life is forever woven into the fabric of our state. From her rural mountain home in East Tennessee to global stages, Dolly carried the Volunteer Spirit with her. At a place where Tennessee welcomes the world, it is fitting that Nashville International Airport would bear the name of our state’s favorite daughter and greet travelers with the enduring legacy of Dolly’s music, generosity, faith, and kindness.”
The idea to rename the airport isn’t new. Over a year before her passing, a petition supporting the change amassed more than 160,000 signatures. By Friday night, Nashville City Council members and a Tennessee state representative supported the proposal. Known as the “Queen of Country,” Parton passed away surrounded by loved ones after a short battle with cancer. Her death resonated deeply across the United States and worldwide, inciting heartfelt tributes from fans, fellow artists, and political figures.
Parton was celebrated not only for her music but also for her distinctive style, charisma, and kindness. Her business acumen and philanthropic efforts were equally renowned. She established the Dollywood Foundation, focusing on property relief and education in East Tennessee. Additionally, her Imagination Library initiative provides free books to children globally.
