Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel delivered a defiant speech on Monday, suggesting that he did not recognize the newly established cease-fire agreement between the United States and Iran. “The struggle has not ended,” Netanyahu proclaimed to the Israeli populace.
His remarks hinted at possible challenges to the peace accord as he stated his refusal to withdraw Israeli forces from Lebanon, a significant demand from Iran during its negotiations with the United States. Israeli troops are currently engaged in combat against Hezbollah, a militant group allied with Iran.
This situation escalated back in March when Hezbollah began operations against Israel as a sign of solidarity with Iran, soon after the U.S.-Israeli conflict with Iran commenced. In response, Israeli forces occupied what Netanyahu describes as a “security zone” in southern Lebanon. Their military action extended to targeting Hezbollah sites beyond these boundaries, which led to airstrikes in and around Beirut, the Lebanese capital, resulting in retaliatory strikes from Iran onto Israeli soil.
The hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah have lasted over three months, resulting in over 3,700 Lebanese casualties and at least 30 Israeli deaths, according to reports from both nations.
During discussions to end the conflict between the U.S. and Iran, the Iranian representatives insisted on Israel’s withdrawal from Lebanon; however, Israel was not part of these negotiations. Separately, Israel and Lebanon conducted talks in Washington aimed at a peace agreement. This accord depends on Hezbollah, which operates independently from the Lebanese government, refraining from attacking Israel. Hezbollah has dismissed the notion of direct involvement in these discussions.
