As the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 terrorist attacks approaches, New York Governor Kathy Hochul has accused the Department of Homeland Security of withholding counterterrorism funding. During a press conference, Gov. Hochul claimed that the DHS is withholding 40% of New York State’s funding for counterterrorism efforts, totaling $87 million.
Governor Hochul criticized the Trump administration, accusing them of ‘defunding the police’ and jeopardizing public safety. She urged for the release of the owed funds, emphasizing that withholding the money dishonors the memory of those who perished on 9/11, as well as undermining the safety of police officers and firefighters who risk their lives daily.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani echoed these concerns, highlighting the federal government’s refusal to provide the promised funding. He stressed the importance of the funds for maintaining essential services such as bomb squads and emergency readiness.
Mamdani outlined the necessity of funding for proper communication and response capabilities of the FDNY. He also mentioned the need for training and equipment for first responders in case of radiological threats. Mamdani argued that leaving a major city like New York to handle these challenges without federal support is unacceptable.
Fox News Digital reached out to the White House and DHS for comments, shedding light on the ongoing debate over funding allocation.
