New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani asserted that democratic socialists can win elections across the United States. He expressed this view during an interview with Jonathan Karl on ABC News. Mamdani referred to the success of his endorsed candidates in New York’s Democratic primaries. This success highlighted his party’s ideological debates ahead of upcoming elections.
Mamdani, identifying as a democratic socialist, told Karl that such candidates could be elected to any position nationwide. His comments followed the primary victories of candidates like Brad Lander, Claire Valez, and Darializa Avila Chevalier in New York. Lander and Chevalier managed to unseat incumbent Democrats.
“There is a widespread desire for a political approach that prioritizes working people,” Mamdani stated. He defended democratic socialism, emphasizing New Yorkers’ and Americans’ appetite for this kind of representation.
Moderate Democrats expressed concern that socialist victories might affect the party’s national standing. Mamdani argued that the Democratic Party needs to communicate more than simple opposition to the Trump administration. He suggested that the New York primary results send a broader message for the Democratic strategy in future elections.
Karl questioned Mamdani about candidate Chevalier, who faced criticism for past statements supporting the abolition of prisons and borders. Mamdani responded that focusing on working people could unite Democrats despite policy disagreements.
Mamdani stressed the need for pragmatic governance. He cited his administration’s achievements in child care, public safety, and infrastructure as evidence of democratic socialism’s effectiveness.
Crime statistics from the NYPD indicated a historic reduction in murders and shootings in New York City. Mamdani used these figures to support his administration’s performance.
In contrast, moderate Democrats proposed a “Promise to America” pledge with principles such as supporting capitalism, secure borders, and fiscal discipline. Mamdani dismissed these anti-socialist actions, focusing instead on delivering tangible results.
The interview touched on international issues, with Karl questioning Mamdani about his stance on Israel. Mamdani stated support for Israel as a state with equal rights but didn’t advocate for defining it strictly as a Jewish state.
Associate editor CJ Womack, who joined Fox News Digital in 2026, reported the interview. Womack has a background in political science and journalism, highlighting the essential role of media in political discourse.
