Time has come for all athletes, and Neymar is no exception. At 34, Neymar entered the game as a late substitute in the 2026 World Cup.
Neymar holds the record as Brazil’s top scorer but had not played for the national team since an ACL and meniscus injury in October 2023. His selection for the 2026 World Cup by Carlos Ancelotti was emotional. Neymar was initially sidelined for Brazil’s first two matches due to a calf injury.
He made his World Cup debut against Scotland in Miami. Before his entry, Vinícius Júnior scored twice, and Matheus Cunha added another, giving Brazil a 3-0 lead. Neymar replaced Cunha in the 76th minute, marking his fourth World Cup appearance.
Ian Darke described Neymar’s appearance as a “rust-shedding exercise.”
The crowd responded energetically whenever Neymar touched the ball. In the 89th minute, Ryan Christie pulled Neymar down, earning a yellow card. Neymar’s subsequent free-kick went off Scottish defenders and was saved by goalkeeper Angus Gunn.
Towards the match’s end, Neymar and Vini Jr. showcased effective teamwork, culminating in a blocked shot by Vini Jr., hinting at potential future collaboration as the tournament progresses.
The final whistle confirmed Brazil’s victory in Group C, advancing them to the knockout stage. They will face Group F’s runner-up in Houston on June 29. At the time, potential opponents include the Netherlands, Japan, or Sweden.
Since 1930, Brazil has claimed five World Cup titles, the most in history. However, they last won in 2002. Winning this year won’t be straightforward, especially due to Raphinha’s injury. Yet the team’s talent is undeniable. Brazil’s success largely depends on Vini Jr., a role Neymar once played. His journey in this World Cup offers a nostalgic finale for a remarkable soccer star.
