Nick Reiner Murder Indictment for Parents: ‘Special Circumstance’ Explained

Nick Reiner, the son of filmmaker Rob Reiner and photographer-producer Michele Singer Reiner, has been indicted on two murder counts related to the December 2025 stabbing deaths of his parents at their Brentwood home in California.

Prosecutors announced on Wednesday that a Los Angeles County grand jury returned an indictment with new “special circumstance” allegations. The indictment claims Nick Reiner, aged 32, committed two murders “by means of lying in wait,” a special circumstance under California law. Additionally, prosecutors included a multiple-murder special circumstance allegation and accused Reiner of using a knife during the killings. Such special-circumstance allegations can increase the potential punishment upon conviction.

The Los Angeles Public Defenders office stated in an email to Newsweek on Wednesday that they had no further comment on the case.

Prosecutors allege both multiple murders and murder by means of lying in wait, indicating the killings involved a deliberate concealment or surprise attack. According to Los Angeles County officials, the inclusion of the lying-in-wait allegation means Reiner faces two special-circumstance claims. If convicted, he could face life imprisonment without parole or the death penalty, although prosecutors have not yet decided on pursuing capital punishment.

District Attorney Nathan J. Hochman remarked that the indictment includes the allegation that Reiner committed the murders “by means of lying in wait.” He described the case as “a profound betrayal by someone who was loved and trusted by the very people he is accused of killing.”
