Nick Torrence entered the baseball season with a clear goal: secure a starting spot for Geneva. As a senior and a designated hitter, he worked diligently to earn his place. Despite initial challenges, Torrence became one of the Vikings’ key players as the season progressed.
“I always believed in my abilities,” Torrence shared. “It was just about seizing the opportunity. During an April 28 game against Lake Park, I hit a double to start things off. Unfortunately, I sprained my thumb going into third base and had to sit out a few games, but that performance helped me secure a starter position. I’ve been consistent ever since.”
The Class 3A Geneseo Supersectional took place at Black Hawk College due to rainfall. Torrence kicked off the game against East Peoria with a strong start similar to the Lake Park matchup. He doubled and scored on Alex Abraham’s single in the first inning, though Geneva faced defeat with an 8-1 loss.
Torrence’s journey included two seasons on junior varsity, as Abraham held the varsity catcher spot. Torrence remained focused and persistent. Eventually, he stood out, securing the designated hitter role and batting second in the lineup. “His bat needed time to heat up since he wasn’t playing daily,” said Coach Brad Wendell. “But once he found his rhythm, he became our leading DH.”
East Peoria started with a 2-0 lead, but Torrence’s hit brought Geneva closer. “That hit felt significant,” Torrence said. “I aimed to see multiple pitches and gain momentum. We knew their pitcher was reliable.”
Despite their effort, Geneva couldn’t maintain momentum as East Peoria’s Roman Moody doubled, tripled, and scored three times. Nonetheless, the Vikings celebrated significant achievements, including their first sectional title.
“It took hard work to reach this level,” Wendell mentioned. “Our talent and daily dedication led us here. It’s the best season we’ve had.”
For Torrence, who doesn’t plan to pursue baseball or golf in college, the season was a highlight. “I expected to start right away, but it required effort to achieve. It felt like the Bears; we kept going until it ended.”
