Nicolas Cage recently discussed his decision to forgo roles in major franchise films in favor of projects that he found more personally fulfilling. During an interview with Complex News, the 62-year-old actor shared his career reflections, highlighting two key moments where he chose one project over a more commercial role.
Cage revealed, “One was when Jim Carrey wanted me to do ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and I said I’d rather do ‘Leaving Las Vegas.’ The other was ‘Spider-Man’ as the Green Goblin and I said I’d rather do ‘Adaptation.’ Both those choices gave me more to do as an actor.”
Jeff Daniels eventually portrayed Harry Dunne in ‘Dumb and Dumber’ and its 2014 sequel, ‘Dumb and Dumber To.’ The Green Goblin role in ‘Spider-Man’ went to Willem Dafoe, who reprised the character in subsequent sequels and in the 2021 film, ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home.’
Cage noted that although he missed out on these franchise roles, he believed he made the right decisions for himself at that time. Regarding his role in ‘Adaptation,’ where he played twin brothers Charlie and Donald, Cage stated, “To play twins in a movie was a big challenge and daunting, and I don’t know if I could do it again. It was a lot, but that script just sang to me.”
In ‘Leaving Las Vegas,’ which premiered in 1995, Cage portrayed an alcoholic screenwriter, earning him both an Academy Award and a Golden Globe Award. His performance in the 2002 film ‘Adaptation’ further bolstered his credentials with another Academy Award nomination.
In another interview with Entertainment Weekly, Cage recounted the physical demands of preparing for his role in the 2024 movie, ‘The Surfer.’ He described an intense surfing experience where he got caught in a rip tide, reflecting on the risks: “I just got pounded and was literally stuck in the rip tide. Now with a young kid, I’m reconsidering such risks.”
Cage has three children. He shares Weston, 35, with actress Christina Fulton, Kal-El, 20, with his third wife Alice Kim, and August Francesca, 3, with his current wife Riko Shibata.
His commitment to his children has influenced his career decisions. Cage openly shared how prioritizing his family led him to decline significant roles in ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘The Matrix.’ He explained, “I turned down ‘Lord of the Rings’ and ‘Matrix’ because I didn’t want to be away from my son Weston for extended periods.”
