In 1971, America took its passion for cars beyond Earth with the Apollo Lunar Rover. This vehicle helped astronauts traverse over 50 miles of the moon’s surface. Today, Jaret Matthews, CEO of Astrolab, shares his insights into the next generation of lunar rovers.
Matthews showcased a prototype of Astrolab’s 21st-century lunar rover in Hawthorne, California. Known as FLEX, the rover is designed to operate for a year, covering extensive distances on the lunar landscape. The vehicle resembles a four-wheel-drive electric car, capable of autonomous operation or carrying two astronauts and supplies.
According to Matthews, these future lunar vehicles combine the practicality of the Apollo Lunar Rover with the technological advancements seen in the Mars Perseverance Rover. They must function both with a crew and remotely from Earth.
“The lunar terrain vehicles must be a blend of past and present technology,” Matthews stated.
NASA has chosen Astrolab and Lunar Outpost to develop initial moon buggies for its southern lunar pole base, scheduled for development over the next several years. Each company receives approximately $220 million for their contributions to the project.
NASA revealed its $20 billion plan for the moon base on Tuesday. Shortly after, a test failure occurred with Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin New Glenn Rocket at Cape Canaveral. This rocket is integral to NASA’s Artemis program, with Blue Origin crafting a lunar lander for rover delivery. It’s uncertain how this incident will affect NASA’s timetable.
Lunar Outpost’s CEO, Justin Cyrus, sees broader opportunities on the moon. His goal: to create vehicles not solely for NASA but appealing to other potential users.
“NASA aspires to be one among many customers,” Cyrus explained. “Creating a robust vehicle can open up new avenues for moon activities.”
