Nithya Raman: The Comeback Kid of L.A. Politics
Nithya Raman faced a familiar scene on the night of the June primary. Standing in front of supporters at a downtown brewery, she found herself outspent and underestimated. Despite early returns showing her in third place behind Karen Bass and Spencer Pratt, she remained optimistic.
Raman, a Los Angeles City Council member, thanked everyone for supporting her campaign. “We may not get an answer we like,” she stated, “but nobody can take away what we’ve built together.” Her speech concluded with dancing, reflecting her joy and confidence for the future.
As counting continued, Raman surpassed Pratt to challenge Bass in November. Her decision to run surprised Los Angeles politics and stirred criticism. Yet, she managed a resilient campaign and secured endorsements from powerful groups.
L.A. chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America and Unite Here Local 11 endorsed Raman, promising strong voter mobilization. Unite Here provides needed working-class support, while DSA’s influence bolsters her campaign.
Despite being a DSA member, Raman didn’t initially get their primary endorsement. Internal debates questioned her positions on issues like police funding. Similarly, Unite Here, previously loyal to Bass, switched allegiance due to Raman’s drive.
Her success isn’t new. In 2020, she defied odds, defeating David Ryu in a historic City Council race. A leaked audio revealed attempts to weaken her district. Despite challenges, she won the 2024 primary outright.
This year, Raman raised less campaign funds than opponents and struggled in debates. However, she capitalized on Bass’s missteps, maintaining her underdog momentum.
While Raman’s path remains challenging, she has shown resilience. Opponents, including Bass supporters and political rivals, present significant obstacles. Critics may label her extreme, though her actions show pragmatism.
Even Spencer Pratt, initially critical of Bass, now targets Raman. His supporters wait to decide allegiance, intensifying election dynamics. Raman anticipated these hurdles, emphasizing her fight against the status quo.
“These powerful interests spent millions against us,” Raman told supporters, reflecting her campaign’s resolve.
Her father, Venkit, humorously noted her name, “Nithya Varsha,” meaning “forever monsoon.” He described her as a relentless, life-giving force. Raman’s future in politics remains an unfolding story worth watching.
