Obama Presidential Center’s Controversial Opening Weekend
The opening weekend of the Barack Obama Presidential Center in Chicago sparked discussion following a ‘land acknowledgment’ that critics viewed as performative. This acknowledgment was part of the political far-left’s perspective that much of the United States was constructed on land taken from Native Americans.
During the weekend, the Black Hawk Performance Company, a Native American dance troupe from the Chicago area, performed traditional dances from several Indigenous tribes. Saturday marked the third day of events, including performances from artists like John Legend and local groups. The dance show, held at John Lewis Plaza, featured drumming, traditional songs, and dances, culminating with audience participation. Critics mocked the land acknowledgment, challenging the sincerity of the gesture without accompanying actions.
The acknowledgment was part of an opening ceremony led by Valerie Jarrett, CEO of the Obama Foundation and former senior advisor to Obama. Jarrett recognized the Anishinaabe, Council of Three Fires, Ojibwe, Odawa, and Potawatomi nations as the original land inhabitants.
Online reactions were mixed. A critic on X noted the irony of acknowledging ‘stolen land’ while retaining the property, suggesting Native Americans might remove the Presidential Center’s building if given the chance. Glenn Beck critiqued the hypocrisy of using an $850 million center to address ‘stolen land.’ He suggested that if the Obama Foundation believed the land was stolen, they should return it rather than profit from it.
Additionally, Siraj Hashmi commented humorously by referencing Chief Keef, a notable figure from Chicago’s South Side. The center includes a placard acknowledging the land as belonging to Indigenous peoples, along with a 2009 quote from Obama reflecting on broken treaties and the historical mistreatment of Native Americans.
