Ohio Teacher Killed in Crash by Driver Previously Deported
A tragic car crash claimed the life of Cameron Lyon, a 23-year-old teacher in Ohio. The accident involved a driver who authorities say had been deported from the United States before.
The crash occurred in Fairfield County on September 6, as reported by the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Lyon, who was driving a Chevrolet Trax, lost his life in a collision with a GMC Terrain. The driver of the GMC, Alvaro Uribe-Gonzalez, faces multiple charges including aggravated vehicular homicide. Authorities noted that Uribe-Gonzalez was without a valid license at the time of the incident.
The incident happened around 6:15 p.m. on U.S. Route 33, near U.S. Route 22, in Hocking Township. The GMC reportedly veered off the road, overcorrected, crossed into opposing traffic, overturned, and struck Lyon’s vehicle. Following the collision, the GMC caught fire.
“Cameron had his whole life ahead of him, and that life was stolen by this criminal who never should have been in our country in the first place,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.
Remembering Cameron Lyon
Lyon was an educator at Crestline Exempted Village Schools, teaching fifth and sixth graders. The school district expressed profound sadness and offered condolences to Lyon’s family, fiancée, and students.
Lyon’s recent graduation from Otterbein University marked the beginning of his teaching career. His untimely death followed his engagement earlier this summer.
An online fundraiser underscores the family’s devastation. Lyon was transported to Fairfield Medical Center, succumbing to injuries shortly after arrival. A passenger with Lyon, Abrielle Kerns, sustained injuries and was hospitalized. Reports indicate that Kerns is still recovering.
“Sadly Cam did not make it and Abrielle has had extensive injuries. She is still in the hospital recovering,” wrote Emily Van Voorhis Kerns on Facebook.
Details About Uribe-Gonzalez
The Department of Homeland Security provided details on Uribe-Gonzalez, a 33-year-old Mexican national. He entered the U.S. in January 2020 and was ordered for removal by an immigration judge. Deported in April 2020, he re-entered the country unlawfully at an unspecified time and location.
Following his arrest related to the crash, ICE lodged a detainer at Fairfield County Jail. The detainer requests notification before any potential release. Uribe-Gonzalez’s bond initially set at $5 million was contested, with prosecutors seeking detention without bond. Fairfield County prosecutor Kyle Witt emphasized the serious nature of the allegations and concerns for public safety as reasons for this request.
As the investigation unfolds, Lyon’s community mourns his loss. School officials have made counseling available for staff and students coping with the tragedy.
