Optogenetics Pioneers Awarded 2026 Nobel Prize in Medicine
At a press conference at the Nobel Forum, Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann, and Georg Nagel. These scientists were recognized for their groundbreaking work on light-gated ion channels and optogenetics, exploring how nerve cell activity can be switched on or off using light. This award was announced on October 5, 2026.
Karl Deisseroth, 54, Peter Hegemann, 71, and Georg Nagel, 73, have made significant contributions to neuroscience. Their research has been crucial in developing methods that use light to control neural activity, providing insights into brain function. The Nobel Assembly commended their work, emphasizing its global impact in understanding neurological pathways and potential disease treatments.
Deisseroth works at Stanford University in California. Hegemann is affiliated with Humboldt University in Berlin, and Nagel is part of the University of Würzburg in Germany. Deisseroth mentioned he was actively working late at his California home when he received the news. He expressed excitement during a phone interview, even without much sleep.
“No real sleep was achieved.” – Karl Deisseroth
Optogenetics is a revolutionary approach that enables researchers to turn specific brain cells on and off using light, helping unravel complex brain processes. This field emerged from Hegemann’s study of green algae’s response to light, identifying proteins that generate electrical signals under blue light exposure. Collaborating with Nagel, he showed the possibility of transferring this light sensitivity to other cells.
Using this foundation, Deisseroth adapted the technique for targeting nerve cells in mice, advancing the understanding of brain circuitry. These discoveries have propelled neuroscience into a new era of exploration.
The Nobel Prize awarding season began with Monday’s announcement in Stockholm. The prize money for 2026 amounts to 12 million Swedish kronor, approximately $1.2 million. It highlights the achievements of individuals or small groups who contribute significantly to their fields.
The announcement of the medicine prize initiates Nobels week. Following this, the Nobel Prizes for physics, chemistry, literature, and peace will be announced on subsequent days. The Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences will be disclosed on October 12, completing the awards schedule.
