As the 2026 college football season began, expectations ran high for the Oregon Ducks. Under head coach Dan Lanning, they appeared poised for their first National Championship. This optimism was fueled by years of successful recruiting, steady performance in the Big Ten Conference, and the return of quarterback Dante Moore. Despite these promising factors, the season took an unexpected turn.
Initial signs of trouble emerged with a narrow victory over Boise State, which failed to reassure fans. A subsequent heavy defeat by Oklahoma State further dented confidence. However, a matchup against the ranked USC Trojans in Los Angeles offered a chance for redemption. Despite a severe injury to Moore from an SC linebacker’s hit, Oregon managed to pull off a win, with backup quarterback Dylan Raiola stepping up to the challenge. The Ducks prevailed 41-27.
After the game, Lanning praised his team’s performance while contrasting it with the entertainment options in Los Angeles, inviting recruits from the area to choose football success in Oregon. Nevertheless, his words soon proved premature. Encountering UCLA, Oregon suffered a disastrous game marked by seven turnovers in a 17-15 loss.
Following this, the Ducks faced Illinois, entering as 10.5-point favorites. Despite an early touchdown, they struggled to score, with offensive drives stalling and concluding with punts, fumbles, and missed field goals. While Oregon managed to score again, Illinois quickly responded with a 75-yard rushing touchdown. Oregon’s missed opportunities to capitalize on scoring pushed the game further out of reach.
Despite being forced to rely on a backup quarterback and experiencing issues within their receiving corps, these struggles have not provided valid excuses for the disappointing season. Oregon received no votes in the AP Poll, raising doubts about Lanning’s future at the helm.
Projecting ahead, Oregon’s schedule remains challenging. They face a ranked Northwestern team on Saturday, travel to Ohio State on November 7, host Michigan on the 14th, and end the season with a rivalry game against Washington. The possibility of five or more losses looms large, placing pressure on Lanning, whose past successes, including multiple College Football Playoff appearances and an Orange Bowl victory, provide him some credibility.
With a costly roster and upcoming top-4 recruiting class, Oregon’s aspirations are tied to championship dreams which now seem more distant. Concerns extend to Raiola’s capability to replace Moore and the defense’s average performance, contrasting with its past strength.
This season reflects a challenging period for Lanning, marking a shift from contender to scrutiny amid modern college football’s dynamic landscape.
