Oregon legend Dan Fouts, familiar with the violence of football, recently discussed incidents in the Ducks’ 41-20 win over USC. In the game, Oregon linebacker Desman Stephens delivered a dangerous late hit to quarterback Dante Moore, who was then carted off the field.
Stephens initially celebrated the hit. However, Oregon’s head coach, Dan Lanning, managed the situation admirably. Fouts praised Lanning for calming the team, leading them in prayer for Moore, and helping them refocus on the game. He emphasized the importance of Lanning’s leadership during this trying time.
I think the way that Lanning handled it was perfect. He brought the team together, calmed them all down, said a prayer for Dante. And it reminded them about focus, and reminded them about the importance of what they’re doing,Fouts shared in an interview.
Fouts expressed his concern upon witnessing the hit, highlighting the game’s inherent violence. He noted injuries are common, but Moore’s situation was particularly alarming.
Regarding Stephens’ actions, Fouts commented on the heat-of-the-moment nature of youth behavior. Following the incident, USC suspended Stephens for the next game and he issued a public apology, acknowledging his mistake and taking responsibility for his actions. Stephens expressed his regret for inappropriate celebrations and hoped for Moore’s recovery.
Moore remains in the NCAA’s concussion protocol, with no set return date. Lanning described Stephens’ hit as “disgusting.”
Fouts, a standout at Oregon and later a Hall of Fame quarterback in the NFL, spent 15 seasons with the San Diego Chargers after being drafted in 1973. He was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
