Sara Gilio of Oswego has made significant strides in her junior year. Last season, she dealt with a fractured foot, which affected her performance. Now, as a junior, she has emerged as a key player. Gilio shares the spotlight with Hannah Herrick, a Dayton recruit, forming a strong duo on the left side.
“Hannah has always been someone I admired,” Gilio remarked. “Competing alongside her feels incredible. We contribute significantly to our team’s success, and learning from her college-bound experience is invaluable.”
Gilio excelled in a recent match, leading with seven kills and four aces, helping Oswego defeat rival Oswego East 25-12, 25-12. Herrick supported the team with five kills and four aces, while Ashley Crouch led Oswego East with three kills.
Gilio faced challenges after a foot fracture, missing a month last season. “She did her best under the circumstances,” noted coach Gary Mosley. “Now, she’s demonstrating remarkable form and a commendable mindset.”
Confidence has been crucial for Gilio. “As a sophomore, I found it overwhelming. This year feels different, being a junior. It’s a confidence booster,” she expressed. Her growth is reflected in statistics, with Herrick at 191 kills and Gilio close behind at 174.
Herrick appreciates Gilio’s progress. “Playing with her is a joy. I offer guidance, whether through game strategy or emotional support,” Herrick shared. Familiar with the recruiting process, Herrick also assists Gilio, who is in contact with college coaches but remains uncommitted.
“Hannah’s always available for discussions,” Gilio said. “We share similar work ethics.”
During a recent game, Gilio’s service game was remarkable, serving five points in a row, three as aces, helping the Panthers secure an early lead. “Serving is crucial,” Gilio emphasized. “It initiates the play and is truly enjoyable.”
Coach Mosley commends her dedication. “Few are as coachable as Sara. Her humility is notable, and her skillset is expanding,” he stated. “Her ambition and assertiveness are noteworthy.”
Gilio’s potential mirrors Herrick’s achievements. “Her future is hers to define,” Mosley observed. “She’s an overlooked gem.”
