After facing criticism for his World Cup debut, Spain’s Mikel Oyarzabal made a remarkable comeback at Atlanta Stadium on Sunday. He became the first player since 1966 to go 30 minutes without a touch in his initial World Cup match. However, Oyarzabal soon found his stride. Nearly a week later, he secured his place in the record books with an impressive display against Saudi Arabia.
Oyarzabal contributed significantly to Spain’s 4-0 victory with two goals and an assist, becoming just the second player in World Cup history to score or assist three goals within the opening 25 minutes of a match. He followed Hungary’s László Fazekas, who achieved this feat in 1982.
Spain’s coach Luis De La Fuente praised Oyarzabal’s impact on the team. “The impact Mikel has on the team is massive, probably bigger than any other player could have in the world,” De La Fuente remarked. “I’m convinced that he’s a footballer that can make history in Spanish football. His numbers are crazy, and I do celebrate his performance.”
Oyarzabal initiated Spain’s dominant showing with an assist to 18-year-old Lamine Yamal, helping set the pace with a goal at the 10-minute mark. He then netted twice, in the 21st and 24th minutes, pushing Spain to a commanding 3-0 lead by halftime. In his time on the field, Oyarzabal attempted five shots, three of which targeted the goal.
During the World Cup Group H match against Saudi Arabia, Oyarzabal downplayed the grandeur of his achievements. “In the end, it’s an anecdote,” Oyarzabal reflected. “I don’t give any importance to it. I’m happy to have scored and helped the team. I always aim to do what’s best for the team.” At 29, Oyarzabal’s focus remained on elevating the reputation of the Spanish national team following his Monday performance.
He elaborated on his mindset: “When things don’t go your way, you criticize yourself, look internally, and strive to improve. We knew we could do much better than the other day. We were eager to turn it around, and it’s crucial to start positively—that’s what happened.”
