Pacific Hurricanes Ahead of Labor Day Weekend
Three hurricanes are currently active in the Pacific Ocean just before Labor Day weekend. Hurricane Lowell is maintaining its status as a Category 4 hurricane, promising to stay strong for the upcoming days. On the Saffir-Simpson scale, a Category 4 hurricane means sustained winds between 130 to 156 mph, which can lead to catastrophic damage.
Hurricane Karina also holds Category 4 strength but is slowly weakening. Hurricane Marie is predicted to strengthen further, with a weakening trend expected later this weekend. According to the National Hurricane Center (NHC), none of these hurricanes carries any coastal watches or warnings for the U.S. mainland at the time of reporting. However, forecasters note that swells from Lowell and Marie may lead to hazardous surf and rip current conditions in Hawaii, parts of Mexico, and Southern California.
Hurricane Lowell and Its Impact
According to the NHC’s recent advisories, Hurricane Lowell is currently the strongest storm among the three. Located about 440 miles south of Hilo, Hawaii, Lowell features maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.
The NOAA Hurricane Hunter aircraft detected that Lowell had intensified into a Category 4 hurricane and will likely maintain this status. The NHC states, “Some fluctuations in intensity are expected during the next few days. However, Lowell is expected to remain a major hurricane for the next several days.”
Lowell is moving west at 10 mph and is expected to continue on a generally westward path while slowing down gradually.
Katrina Remains Strong
According to the NHC advisory, Hurricane Karina is approximately 1,325 miles east of Hilo, Hawaii. Its maximum sustained winds measure 130 mph, keeping it within the Category 4 range. The hurricane is advancing west-northwest at 10 mph.
Although a gradual weakening is anticipated, Karina is forecast to stay a hurricane through the weekend.
Marie Gains Strength Offshore
Meanwhile, Hurricane Marie became a hurricane Wednesday evening in the eastern Pacific. Positioned about 375 miles southwest of Baja California’s southern tip, the storm exhibits sustained winds of 80 mph, classifying it as Category 1.
Marie is on a west-northwest trajectory at 10 mph, with further strengthening expected by Friday before it begins to weaken later this weekend. Although Marie is not forecast to make landfall, forecasters caution that its effects might still impact coastlines.
“Swells generated by Marie will affect portions of the coast of southwest Mexico and the Baja California Peninsula for the next few days and will likely spread northward to Southern California over the weekend,” notes the NHC.
Implications for U.S. Coastal Regions
For U.S. residents, the primary concern from these hurricanes does not involve direct landfall but rather dangerous coastal conditions. Hurricane Lowell is generating swells expected to influence areas of Hawaii over the next few days. The NHC warns that these waves could result in “life-threatening surf and rip current conditions” around the islands.
Marie is projected to send swells toward Southern California during the holiday weekend, potentially escalating risks for beachgoers, swimmers, and surfers, even though the storm’s center will remain offshore.
Currently, Karina poses the least threat to populated areas, and the NHC reports no immediate land hazards linked to this storm. Despite their significant separation, these three hurricanes highlight the rare occurrence of multiple active hurricanes in the Pacific basin at the same time.
Forecasters will keep monitoring their strength and path through Labor Day weekend. Everyone in Hawaii and Southern California should closely follow local forecasts and beach hazard statements. Dangerous surf and rip currents can develop far from a hurricane’s center, often posing the greatest risks to public safety.
