Patrick Mahomes Secures Long-Term Future with Kansas City Chiefs

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) — Patrick Mahomes will be leading the Kansas City Chiefs well into his thirties. A newly restructured deal agreed upon on Wednesday extends his contract by two years and increases his total compensation beyond $500 million. This information comes from a source who requested anonymity, as the Chiefs do not publicly share financial specifics of their contracts. The team confirmed the extension by posting a photo of Mahomes signing it on social media.

Initially, Mahomes signed a landmark 10-year, $450 million contract in 2020. The present extension secures his position with the Chiefs through the 2033 season, at which point he will be 38 years old. This deal is worth $504.75 million, with possible increments reaching $522.25 million due to incentives and escalators.

“Over the past decade, Patrick has become one of the most prominent and loved sports figures,” remarked Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt. “He has played a crucial role in elevating our franchise to five Super Bowl appearances and three championships. Moreover, he has been instrumental in enhancing the Chiefs brand and putting Kansas City on the global map while serving as an admirable role model.”

Mahomes is renowned both as a generational talent and a person of high character. The Chiefs consistently rework his contract during the offseason to maintain financial flexibility, ensuring they have the necessary resources to bolster their squad in pursuit of championships. This latest agreement marks a substantial pay rise for Mahomes given recent quarterback contracts for Dak Prescott, Jordan Love, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen that have reshaped the quarterback market. The agency representing Mahomes, Equity Sports, and its CEO Chris Cabott shared on social media that “the magic continues.” Mahomes faced a challenging offseason, having undergone surgery last December to repair ligaments damaged in his left knee towards the close of a game against the Chargers. Despite the injury, he has committed wholeheartedly to his rehabilitation in Kansas City, partaking in the entirety of the Chiefs’ offseason program which ends Thursday with the last session of their three-day mandatory minicamp.

Head coach Andy Reid praised Mahomes’ efforts during offseason workouts, applauding his hard work and participation which aids both recovery and his connection with the receivers. Reid emphasized the importance of Mahomes maintaining rhythm and timing.

Mahomes has signaled his intent to be game-ready for Week 1. The Chiefs will face the Rams on August 15 for their preseason opener, followed by their regular-season start against the defending AFC West champion Denver on September 14 in a Monday night showdown at Arrowhead Stadium.
