The New York Knicks made a remarkable comeback from a 29-point deficit, edging the San Antonio Spurs 107-106 on Wednesday night. This victory puts the Knicks on the brink of their first NBA championship since 1973. OG Anunoby sealed the win with a crucial tip-in after a missed three-point attempt by Jalen Brunson, leaving only 1.2 seconds on the clock. The Knicks now hold a 3-1 lead in the NBA Finals and have three opportunities to secure the title.
Unlikely Turnaround
Initially, the game seemed out of reach as the Spurs secured a 27-point lead by halftime. However, Brunson spearheaded the Knicks’ revival, contributing 36 points. Anunoby added 33 points, and his decisive play came as Brunson’s shot softly rebounded off the rim. Knicks coach Mike Brown praised Anunoby, encouraging him to dominate the offensive glass. Brown commented that there might not have been a bigger play in Knicks’ history.
The Spurs initially led 81-52 in the third quarter. Boston’s comeback from a 24-point deficit against the Lakers in 2008 was the previous record. The only larger playoff comeback was the Los Angeles Clippers’ rally from 31 points down against the Golden State Warriors in 2019.
Game Developments
The Knicks had recently ended a 13-game winning streak in their previous game and appeared on track for another loss as the Spurs, led by Victor Wembanyama, built the largest halftime lead held by a visiting team in the finals. However, the Spurs cooled in the second half, hitting only 3 out of 17 three-point attempts while the Knicks outpaced them, scoring 58-30.
“We got on our heels, we missed some shots,” Spurs coach Mitch Johnson stated. “It’s disappointing, to say the least.”
The atmosphere in Madison Square Garden was electric as fans joined in singing Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin’,” witnessing a comeback that seemed improbable. Wembanyama finished with 24 points and 13 rebounds but had difficulties, shooting 9 for 25 from the field.
Challenging Moments
Crowd restrictions remained from Game 3, affecting the Knicks’ plans for an outdoor watch party. Despite a lackluster first half, the home team restricted the Spurs to 14 points in the third quarter, allowing a 13-0 run to close the gap to 90-75 by the quarter’s end. Known for their resilience, these Knicks also overcame a 22-point deficit against Cleveland in the Eastern Conference finals.
Dylan Harper’s 21 points led the Spurs, while De’Aaron Fox and Devin Vassell added 18 each. The game remained tense when Stephon Castle’s free throws put San Antonio briefly ahead. Yet, the Knicks found another push.
Wembanyama remarked on the Spurs’ second-half decline, noting a lack of hunger. Fans expressed their displeasure towards Wembanyama pre-game. He faced aggressive play, including a flagrant foul by Mitchell Robinson. Wembanyama himself was involved in a flagrant foul and missed two critical free throws near the game’s end.
The Spurs quickly established dominance with a 12-2 lead and maintained an 11 for 16 performance from the three-point line during the first half.
