The New England Patriots are preparing for their season opener against the Seattle Seahawks, with uncertainty over star cornerback Christian Gonzalez’s availability. Gonzalez had voiced uncertainty about playing in Week 1 due to ongoing contract negotiations with the Patriots. The first-round pick from 2023 recently found himself in a public dispute concerning his contract, especially following Devon Withspoon’s substantial four-year, $132 million extension with the Seahawks during the summer.
On Monday night, the Patriots reached a groundbreaking agreement with Gonzalez, as reported by ESPN. Gonzalez has signed a four-year contract worth $135 million, including $102 million guaranteed. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, this record-setting deal was confirmed late Monday night.
Celebrating the agreement, Gonzalez expressed gratitude on Instagram, stating, “THANK YOU LORD! PATS NATION LETS GO.” Despite the uncertainties, Gonzalez practiced with the Patriots last week and emphasized his commitment to focusing on the present. He noted, “I mean, I’m here right now. I’m here. Like I said, I’m worried about this practice. Focused on this practice. Always be where my feet are and do what I gotta do.”
Gonzalez is crucial to the Patriots’ defense, contributing significantly during their Super Bowl appearance in February. He has been recognized for his impressive performance, earning second-team All-Pro honors in 2024 and a Pro Bowl nomination in 2025. In the Super Bowl, Gonzalez made several critical pass breakups, maintaining the team’s competitiveness until late in the fourth quarter.
Throughout his three-year career, Gonzalez, now 24, has started 34 games, recording 145 tackles, one sack, 24 passes defensed, and three interceptions. Last season, Pro Football Focus ranked him as the 43rd best cornerback in the league.
