Penn State Coach Matt Campbell Embraces Joe Paterno’s Legacy

Matt Campbell, the new head coach at Penn State, is taking a distinct approach in honoring the legacy of Joe Paterno, a previous coach whose career ended under controversial circumstances. In a shift from previous coaches, Campbell is openly celebrating Paterno’s contributions to the team and university.

During his introductory press conference, Campbell made several references to Paterno, underlining the importance of understanding the history that shapes Penn State. He stated, “What makes Penn State so special is the history of this place. It’s who came before us, what they’ve done, to allow us to have a platform to play in front of this unbelievable crowd.”

Campbell’s approach contrasts with the “arm’s length” stance taken by his predecessors, Bill O’Brien and James Franklin, following Paterno’s dismissal due to the Jerry Sandusky scandal. Despite the controversy, Campbell keeps a photo of Paterno in his office at the Lasch Building and emphasizes the significance of acknowledging the past.

The university is also highlighting Paterno’s contributions with a new exhibit at Beaver Stadium. This exhibit features Paterno’s office desk and various artifacts from his more than 40-year tenure with the Nittany Lions. While the campus library still carries Paterno’s name, his statue was removed after the scandal, making this exhibit a notable re-entry of Paterno’s presence in the stadium environment.

During Paterno’s time as head coach, Penn State secured two national championships in 1982 and 1986, along with three Big Ten championships. His overall coaching record stands at 409 wins, 136 losses, and three ties. Although the team has not quite matched that level of success since his departure, there have been moments reminiscent of the previous winning era.

By acknowledging Paterno and his impressive accomplishments, Campbell seeks to inspire his team and build toward sustained success. His strategy involves tapping into Penn State’s rich history to foster a strong foundation for future achievements.
