Pete Buttigieg Distances Himself from Biden’s Messaging

Former Transportation Secretary and potential 2028 presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg made a notable attempt to separate himself from former President Joe Biden during a Politico interview. Buttigieg expressed his intention to move away from slogans associated with the past, including ‘Build Back Better,’ a key component of Biden’s 2020 campaign.

‘I’m trying to purge my vocabulary of anything with the prefix ‘re-,’ anything with the word ‘back’ in it,’ Buttigieg stated. He emphasized the importance of focusing on future developments rather than returning to previous norms. This stance marks a departure from Biden’s original campaign message, which favored a ‘return to normal.’

When Politico’s Jonathan Martin pointed out the connection to Biden’s slogan, Buttigieg responded that if such a strategy could have succeeded, it already would have. He rejected the ‘return to normal’ narrative, questioning its effectiveness in addressing current challenges.

Buttigieg explained his approach as offering bold ideas that may not fit within the traditional left-versus-center framework. He highlighted the importance of forward-thinking initiatives rather than reverting to the past.

Regarding his relationship with Biden, Buttigieg commented that while he respected Biden as a ‘good man’ and ‘good boss,’ he did not consider him a mentor due to their lack of close personal relationship.

Buttigieg’s remarks coincided with a recent poll from the University of New Hampshire showing him in close competition with Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez for a potential 2028 presidential race. While he has not committed to running, he has supported ambitious proposals like expanding the Supreme Court and eliminating the Electoral College.

These positions have sparked critiques, including from former RNC chairman Reince Priebus, who cautioned that Buttigieg and similar Democrats may be aligning with views outside mainstream America.

The dialogue on Buttigieg’s stance and potential candidacy continues as he navigates the political landscape leading up to 2028.
