The New York Knicks celebrated a milestone achievement by clinching their first NBA championship in 53 years, defeating the San Antonio Spurs in the recent NBA Finals. As they move into the 2026-27 NBA season, the Knicks face the challenges that come with being the league champions.
Experts are contemplating which teams in the Eastern Conference will pose the greatest challenge to the Knicks. NBA analyst Kendrick Perkins has identified the Philadelphia 76ers as the primary contenders.
During the offseason, the 76ers strengthened their roster significantly. They signed LeBron James, an iconic NBA superstar, through free agency and secured Jaylen Brown via a major trade with the Boston Celtics. These additions complement a strong lineup, including Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
Perkins expressed his view on the matter during an ESPN NBA Today session, stating, “The 76ers are the team to dethrone the Knicks.”
Last season, without James and Brown, the 76ers advanced to the second round of the playoffs after winning their first series against the Celtics. However, they were swept by Jalen Brunson and the Knicks thereafter.
Mark your calendars for Oct. 20, as the 76ers will face the Knicks in their season opener, beginning their 2026-27 campaign with what promises to be an electrifying matchup.
