Game 2 of the National League Wild Card Series ended with a thrilling win for the Philadelphia Phillies. Alec Bohm’s two-out home run in the 10th inning lifted the Phillies to a 4-3 victory over the Atlanta Braves.
Philadelphia had trailed 3-1 before two pivotal moments. Kyle Schwarber and Bryce Harper each hit solo home runs in the seventh inning to equalize the score. Harper’s home run was especially significant as it occurred shortly after he made a fielding error that proved costly in the eighth inning.
“Probably should have been caught, obviously,” Harper admitted, reflecting on the error.
Andrew Painter made a significant contribution by pitching three scoreless innings. He protected the Phillies’ compromised bullpen and stranded two runners in the 10th, effectively closing the game after a successful ABS challenge.
Bohm’s decisive homer, a 357-foot shot off right-hander Didier Fuentes, was his third career postseason home run. This victory forces a winner-take-all Game 3, as the Phillies aim to maintain their postseason dominance over the Braves.
In the seventh inning, Atlanta initially took the lead when Drake Baldwin’s double, which glanced off Harper’s glove, drove in Sean Murphy for a 2-1 advantage. Matt Olson followed with a sacrifice fly, adding to Atlanta’s score.
Despite this setback, the Phillies wrested control with Schwarber and Harper’s back-to-back home runs during the eighth inning against Dylan Lee, who had previously secured a win in Game 1. Schwarber’s drive reached 447 feet, while Harper’s traveled 418 feet.
Pitching performances were noteworthy. Tyler Mahle exhibited control, allowing one run and six hits over seven innings for Atlanta. Cristopher Sánchez, pitching for Philadelphia, conceded three runs across 6 2/3 innings, delivering a career-high 116 pitches.
The start time for Game 3 remains to be announced. The game will occur in Atlanta, either at 2:15 p.m. or 8:15 p.m. ET, influenced by the outcomes of other Wild Card Series Game 2 matches.
