Pittsburgh Doctor Fatally Stabbed at Home
A Pittsburgh children’s hospital doctor, Dr. Idris Evans, aged 46, was tragically stabbed to death, and his wife was critically injured during a home invasion early Thursday. The attack occurred while the couple was sleeping in their Edgewood, Pennsylvania residence, according to the Allegheny County Police Department.
Dr. Evans was employed at UPMC Children’s Hospital as a pediatric critical care physician. His wife remains in critical yet stable condition following the attack. At 12:31 a.m., a 9-1-1 call reported a stabbing incident in the 100 block of Linden Avenue, where first responders discovered Evans and his wife suffering from multiple stab wounds.
Dr. Idris Evans was a pediatric critical care physician at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
Evans was transported to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead. His wife was also hospitalized. Police have identified the suspect as 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway from Pittsburgh.
Witness testimonies revealed Hemingway allegedly entered the home and attacked Evans and his wife during their sleep. According to court documents, Evans’ wife stated they awoke to the assailant assaulting them with a kitchen knife. She described the attacker as being scantily clad and speaking of “being God.”
During the invasion, Evans’ wife instructed their children, ages 8 and 12, to flee to a neighbor’s house. She reported that Evans addressed the intruder as “Elijah” as if he recognized him. Authorities are investigating any potential prior relationship between Evans and Hemingway. Allegheny County Assistant Superintendent Victor Joseph mentioned the investigation is ongoing to determine if the men knew each other.
A K-9 unit located Hemingway near a home with hand injuries. He remains hospitalized and awaits transfer to Allegheny County Jail while facing charges including criminal homicide, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass.
Police found the suspect, Elijah Hemingway, with injuries and charged him with multiple offenses.
Authorities have not established a motive, and the investigation into the relationship between Evans and Hemingway continues. Dr. Evans held the position of medical director for the Pediatric Critical Care Transport Team at UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh and was an assistant professor at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine.
The UPMC and University of Pittsburgh communities expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Dr. Evans, recognizing him as a dedicated caregiver and respected colleague. They extended their condolences to his family and requested privacy for them during this challenging time.
