The Pittsburgh Steelers have made a significant decision this offseason by hiring Mike McCarthy as head coach. This marks the first head coaching change since 2007, following Mike Tomlin’s departure after an impressive 19-year tenure. During his time, Tomlin led the team to a Super Bowl victory and never faced a losing season.
Team legend Jerome Bettis expressed his enthusiasm for the new hire. “I think he’s definitely a fundamentals-type coach,” Bettis commented. “He’s won a championship, so he’s a championship-caliber head coach. He knows what success looks like.” Bettis shared these thoughts in a recent interview with Fox News Digital.
I think there’s a lot of excitement for what he brings to the table.
McCarthy previously led the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl win over the Steelers in 2011, with Aaron Rodgers as the quarterback. Now, both McCarthy and Rodgers find themselves with the Steelers, embarking on a new chapter.
Bettis noted the excitement surrounding McCarthy’s leadership. “We’re excited that he’s starting the next chapter of the Steelers organization in terms of a leadership perspective,” he said.
Reflecting on Tomlin’s exit, Bettis appreciated his long-term impact. “I was surprised, but in the same breath, I was not,” Bettis stated. He recognized Tomlin’s commitment over nearly two decades and acknowledged the inevitability of change. “He had been there 19 years. I mean, that’s a hell of a run in terms of the timetable. So, you knew that he had put a lot of time in with the organization.” Bettis is grateful for Tomlin’s contributions to the team.
Jerome Bettis, known as “The Bus,” remains a celebrated figure in Steelers history and the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his 13 NFL seasons, the last 10 with the Steelers, Bettis accumulated 13,662 rushing yards, 91 touchdowns, and played a key role in the Steelers’ Super Bowl XL victory.
Away from football, Bettis will participate in the American Century Tournament from July 10-12 at Edgewood Golf Course in Lake Tahoe. Fans can catch the event broadcast on NBC and Peacock.
