Podcaster Avi Lichtschein recently engaged in a heated discussion with popular children’s educator Ms. Rachel, known officially as Rachel Griffin Accurso. During an episode of his show “Depends on the Context,” Lichtschein recounted meeting Accurso at a neighborhood park while both were there with their children.
Lichtschein questioned her stance on Israel, asking why she held anti-Israel views. Accurso clarified that she is not against Israel itself but opposes its government and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. “I pushed back on this, and I said, ‘That’s absurd,'” Lichtschein remarked, highlighting that Netanyahu is Israel’s elected leader.
Lichtschein argued against Accurso’s comments, saying, “Saying you’re anti-Netanyahu, but you’re not anti-Israel? Netanyahu is the democratically elected leader of the sovereign nation.”
Additionally, the conversation addressed Accurso’s comments about Israel’s actions in its conflict with Hamas. She accused Israel of committing “genocide,” referencing the casualty figures during the conflict. Lichtschein responded by differentiating between the horrors of war and the specific accusation of genocide, emphasizing that accusing Israel fuels global hostility towards Jews.
Despite her statements, Accurso maintained that her views support a Jewish state and cited her personal connection through her husband’s Jewish family. Lichtschein criticized her rhetoric, expressing concern over its potential impact on the Jewish community, even as he recognized her compassion for children.
According to Lichtschein, his goal wasn’t to change her views but to underline the responsibility that comes with a large audience. He wanted Accurso to consider how the narratives she supports might influence perceptions and actions.
In a statement, Lichtschein reflected on the encounter, saying, “I don’t think Rachel hates Jews, and I’m sure her advocacy comes from a place of genuine compassion for children. But when you have an audience as enormous as hers, you have a responsibility to understand the consequences of the claims you’re amplifying.”
Fox News reached out to Accurso for her side, and while she described herself as a Zionist, Lichtschein noted the need for careful rhetoric, given the influence of large platforms.
