A tragic incident occurred in Montreal, resulting in the death of a police officer during a shootout on Monday. The event led to a tense three-hour period where city residents were instructed to remain indoors while authorities pursued a suspect.
One gunman was killed at the scene, but police initially believed there was a second suspect. Ultimately, Montreal police chief Fady Dagher confirmed that there was only one attacker. He assured the public that the threat had been eliminated and that the situation was now safe.
The shooting took place in the Côte-des-Neiges neighborhood, near a high-rise building with commercial units including a grocery store and restaurant. Authorities were alerted after reports of a firearm aimed from a hotel window. When officers responded, they were met with gunfire, resulting in a fatal confrontation.
Chief Dagher expressed grief at a news conference. “Today, one of ours has fallen in the line of duty,” he said, noting it was the first officer death in the city in 24 years.
Following the incident, the province of Quebec issued an emergency alert warning of a dangerous suspect at large. Residents were advised to stay away from windows and secure their homes.
Soraya Martinez Ferrada, the mayor of Montreal, conveyed heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officer in a social media statement.
An eyewitness account from Mordy Aisenstark, a manager at a nearby pizza restaurant, detailed his experience. He heard gunshots around 11:30 a.m. and led his staff to safety. Later, he saw the shooter, wearing camouflage, lying dead with a firearm nearby. Law enforcement guided the restaurant’s employees to shelter in a bathroom.
Quebec’s domestic security minister, Ian Lafrenière, stated that comprehensive policing resources were allocated to the investigation. However, the assailant’s motive remains unclear.
