Political Conflict in Iran Over US Negotiations
In Iran, a significant political struggle is unfolding as a fringe but vocal group of hard-liners is actively attempting to undermine ongoing negotiations between Iran and the United States. These hard-liners utilize rallies, state media, and both private and public statements to voice their opposition.
The hard-line faction, though small, holds influence with members in Parliament and the Supreme National Security Council. They openly reject any concessions to Washington. They employ various platforms to derail potential agreements.
The prospect of an agreement remains uncertain. President Trump held a two-hour meeting with cabinet members at the White House but postponed a final decision. Meanwhile, Iran’s lead negotiator, Gen. Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, expressed skepticism about trusting Washington. He affirmed that no action would be taken until the other side acted first.
In Iran, the political fray persists. State television, under the leadership of a hard-line director, has highlighted the divisions and reported negotiations as failures. In a meeting with state TV’s senior leaders, President Masoud Pezeshkian called for restraint to prevent further discord.
President Pezeshkian pointed out that even the late former supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, supported negotiations. Despite this, current broadcasts advocate against dialogue.
On Friday, Tehran witnessed a massive rally of hard-line supporters. Participants displayed strong defiance, waving flags and chanting against US and Israeli actions. A state TV reporter interviewed attendees, capturing sentiments of resistance and determination. One woman expressed a desire for punishment while a man pledged unwavering support.
