Congressman Eric Swalwell from California has resigned from Congress following multiple allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct. These accusations also hindered his campaign for governorship in California.
The special election to fill the vacant seat left by Swalwell remains unresolved as of early Wednesday. Swalwell resigned in April amid allegations of sexual assault from at least five women. Before these issues, he was also a gubernatorial candidate, but he withdrew from that race as well.
Competing for Swalwell’s former seat are State Senator Aisha Wahab and Melissa Hernandez, who is the President of the Bay Area Rapid Transit Board. The primary election on Tuesday determines who will fill Swalwell’s seat for the rest of the term. However, this competition also acts as the primary for the midterms, ensuring that Wahab and Hernandez will face off again in November.
Wahab and Hernandez became the top two candidates in the special election’s jungle primary for California’s 14th Congressional District held on June 16. According to California’s open primary system, the top vote-getters, irrespective of party affiliation, advance to the general election.
This race illustrates a broader trend in Democratic primaries, where progressive candidates, often backed by the Democratic Socialists of America, challenge establishment Democrats.
Wahab, since serving in the State Senate from 2022, has focused her campaign on reducing ICE’s influence, co-authoring legislation allowing citizens to sue agents more easily, lowering prescription drug prices, and promoting investment in renewable energy. She is supported by Our Revolution, founded by Senator Bernie Sanders, and has backing from Attorney General Rob Bonta, Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, and Congressman Greg Casar.
Melissa Hernandez is more moderate, especially on immigration. Hernandez, the daughter of Mexican immigrants, acknowledges the faults in the immigration system but supports smart border security and regional cooperation. She has gained endorsements from nearly a dozen Congressional members.
Despite Wahab’s critical views on ICE, her campaign faced controversy when her father, via Facebook, urged her supporters to “call ICE” on Hernandez. The campaign later issued an apology on its website.
This political development continues to resonate in California’s political landscape, drawing national attention.
