Former New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski shared insights on how quarterback Drake Maye might elevate his performance in the upcoming NFL season. With the Patriots waiving veteran receiver Stefon Diggs after Super Bowl LXI, the team signed former Philadelphia Eagles star AJ Brown, giving Maye a significant asset in his receiving lineup. Brown is seen as a key factor in helping Maye enhance his game.
Gronkowski mentioned, “[Brown’s] kind of a player that reminds me of myself, but at the wide receiver position. A bigger body that knows how to use his body. He can get open even though he’s covered.” This aspect of Brown’s play is expected to be pivotal for Maye’s development. For Gronkowski, Maye’s growth as a player lies in how he utilizes Brown’s presence on the field.
He emphasized the impact, saying, “Drake Maye’s gonna develop more as a player because he’s never really had a guy the size of AJ Brown with the skill set, so let’s see where Drake Maye can place the ball this year when AJ Brown is covered.” The challenge for Maye is to throw the ball such that Brown can leverage his abilities to make plays.
The upcoming season holds promise for Maye, who came off an impressive sophomore year with 4,394 passing yards, 31 touchdowns, and just eight interceptions. He led in QBR with 77.1 and was the top quarterback with a 113.5 passer rating.
Brown, coming from a season riddled with rumored issues at the Eagles, managed 1,003 receiving yards and seven touchdowns. A fresh start with New England offers him a chance to showcase his talents further. Additionally, he reunites with former coach Mike Vrabel and plays under offensive coordinator Josh McDaniel, who Gronkowski believes will efficiently incorporate Brown into their strategies.
The Patriots are again contenders in the AFC, facing strong teams like Josh Allen’s Buffalo Bills, Lamar Jackson’s Baltimore Ravens, and Patrick Mahomes’ Kansas City Chiefs. A successful partnership between Maye and Brown could greatly boost their competitive edge this season.
