After supporting Barack Obama in two presidential elections, Iowa has shifted to the right. Yet economic challenges and the impact of Trump-era policies are fueling dissatisfaction with state leadership.
Shifts in Political Landscape
Iowa has not elected a Democrat as governor since 2006. The state’s Senate seat has been out of Democratic hands since Tom Harkin retired in 2014. Currently, all four of Iowa’s House seats are Republican-held.
The state’s economic struggles, combined with policies from the Trump administration, are leading Democrats to believe Iowa could once again become a battleground state. Barack Obama’s two victories in Iowa demonstrate the state’s potential to swing between political parties.
Democratic Nominees Emerge
In recent democratic primaries, voters leaned toward a moderate choice for Senate, selecting Josh Turek, a former Paralympian. Additionally, Rob Sand, the sole Democrat in statewide office as auditor, is running to replace the retiring Republican governor, Kim Reynolds.
Republican Divisions on Display
Republicans faced a tumultuous primary, rejecting Trump’s endorsement of Representative Randy Feenstra for governor. Instead, they chose Zach Lahn, a businessman and farmer. This decision highlights internal divisions within the state GOP.
Economic Concerns Driving Change
Historically, Iowa may not have drawn much attention from Washington. However, after voting for Trump in three consecutive elections, the state’s recent policies have skewed conservative, affecting education, abortion, and transgender rights. However, the economy has weakened over two years, prompting calls for change.
Trump’s tariffs increased prices for tractors and fertilizers, disrupting Iowa’s soybean industry by eliminating China as a key trading partner. Tariffs on steel and aluminum further impacted manufacturers.
These economic factors, coupled with shifting political dynamics, are reshaping the political scene in Iowa.
