The World Cup clash between Croatia and Portugal delivered intense action, featuring renowned players Luka Modric and Cristiano Ronaldo. The match attracted attention due to the possibility of it being the last World Cup appearance for either superstar. Ronaldo played a pivotal role for Portugal, scoring a penalty kick to equalize the game in the second half.
While Modric’s Croatian side fought hard, they experienced a narrow 2-1 loss. A critical moment occurred when a late goal by Croatia was disallowed by VAR, which would have tied the game at 2-2. The offside call came against Mario Pasalic, determined through advanced technology embedded in the game balls, which ensures accurate rulings.
Croatia’s coach, Zlatko Dalic, refrained from heavily criticizing the referees but expressed dissatisfaction, stating, “The refereeing was definitely very poor. Nothing went our way. But that’s not the reason we lost. Croatia lost, and I don’t really have the right to complain.”
“There is no subjective opinion — the chip of the ball shows. There was no bad decision, no unlucky call,” said Portugal head coach Roberto Martinez. “Today was clear, and the technology helped. It showed us that. Today we were fortunate.”
Despite the disillusionment amongst Croatian players and fans, who protested the call, the technology’s role made the decision unequivocal. Reports indicated it was the tenth instance of a goal disallowance by VAR in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
During the match, Portugal benefited from six fouls, while Croatia was penalized 12 times, one of which led to Ronaldo’s penalty goal. Portugal controlled the game with 60% possession compared to Croatia’s 40%. Ronaldo’s efforts, coupled with a decisive goal from teammate Goncalo Ramos within the second half’s extra time, secured Portugal’s victory.
Looking ahead, Portugal prepares for a challenging match against Spain in the Round of 16. They will encounter 18-year-old sensation Lamine Yamal on Monday.
